Hong KongWelcome to Travel Guide 2 Hong Kong, the site about travel, tourism and vacations in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is one of two (along with Macau) special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China. Hong Kong was a British colonial territory from 1842 (although actually acquired in stages) to 1997. When the United Kingdom transfered sovereignty back to China in 1997, this was done with the agreement that while the central Chinese government would be responsible for defense and foreign affairs, Hong Kong would maintain control, until at least 2047, over its own domestic affairs including the legal and monetary system, immigration and customs policies, police force, and representation in international organizations and events. As of 2007, Hong Kong has an estimated population of 6,921,700. Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated territories in the world with approximately 16,000 people per square mile (6,250 per km2). Hong Kong has a capitalist economy based on free market policies, lox taxes and non-intervention by the government. During the 1960s through to the 1990s, Hong Kong achieved steady high growth rates, and was dubbed one of the Four Asian Tigers along with Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan. In the past, Hong Kong's economy included a significant manufacturing sector, however manufacturing has now largely relocated to China, and Hong Kong's economy is now mostly based around services. Today Hong Kong has the 6th highest GDP per capita in the world, ahead of the four big economies in western Europe (France, Germany, Italy and the UK), as well as Japan.
